Deborah (she/her/hers), is excited to continue the CBI Forest School adventure moving up with students she worked with in the Dogwoods class to accompany them as Oaks. She is thrilled to be staying outdoors with kids this coming school year and share her love of learning and all things wild!

Deborah has 27 years of experience as a private school reading and language arts teacher, and has always sought to incorporate appreciation and wonder for the natural world into her teaching. Her own personal learning journey includes dyslexia and striving to find the best ways to support her learning differences. She has a Masters of Teaching from VCU, attended UNH for graduate level language and writing courses, and has trained and taught at the Oakland School using a blend of Orton-Gillingham and Wilson reading programs to address the needs of students with dyslexia and varied learning differences aged 5-8..

In addition to her specialized reading instruction, Deborah is an outdoor program developer and facilitator, leading children ages 4-14 in outdoor exploration. She is certified in WFA (Wilderness First Aid),has co-led eight groups of rising high school freshman in Grand Classroom adventures to the Grand Canyon/Yosemite/Yellowstone parks, is a Rivanna Master Naturalist, and has implemented the curriculum of Awakening Inquiry and Leave No Trace. Deborah and her husband Steve, a native of Fluvanna County, have four grandchildren ages 7-15 who are inheriting their love of the natural world and outdoor adventures.
